Sun Moving to Ubuntu Linux106
voted
Forget OpenSolaris, and hello to Ubuntu. In a bold move Sun seems to be adopting Ubuntu Linux and leaving behind OpenSolaris as well as some of the other major linux distros like RedHat and Suse. In an interview with Reuters on April 2, Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth reinforced the "growing relations" between Sun and Ubuntu. This release comes just before the scheduled release of "Hardy Heron" Cononical's latest Ubuntu version due in late April. It looks like this has been a long courtship that dates back to 2006. I think things are getting much more serious now. Might we see a marriage proposal soon? We already see that Sun is going to sponsor Ubuntu Live, a conference for Ubuntu users scheduled for this summer. I'm sure they'll use this platform to promote their open source strategy and recent moves within the community. With recent purchases of MySQL, and other big name open source projects, Sun has instantly put themselves at the forefront of the open source movement. They've done a good job of reinventing themselves over the last few year with some good strategic acquisitions. Some of these moves include: April 2008 March 2008 March 2008 February 2008 October 2007 May 2007 October 2006 March 2006 August 2005 I was big fan of Sun during the .com boom, but they fell out of favor when new more open systems began taking hold. Sun's strategy has been criticized, but they've stuck to it and it may actually pay off. They may get a second look from me.
