The New Face of Advertising

If Facebook is going to move into the realm of online advertising it could rival networks like google, amazon, and even television. Their strategy was detailed late last year .

In short Facebook will use its social network to advertise products by word of mouth. For example when a Facebook user buys a product the seller may ask for permission to use their “face” to promote the product to their network of friends. Consumers are more likely to buy something that is recommended from a friend than by some stranger or review they read on Amazon.com.

Facebook strategy also focuses on promoting brands allowing users to back brands they prefer. For example you may be a fan of Nike and want let your network know that is the brand you prefer over others.

It is a strategy that can be risky for Facebook. It risks alienating many of their users if it’s not implemented correctly.

If it works it could fundamentally change the way products are marketed and developed.

Users will probably get some sort of discount or other incentive to become a "spokesperson" for the product. I wouldn't be surprised if Facebook got a decent kickback based on how many users agreed to be such a spokesman.
