Memory Usage Statistics for Firefox 387
vote
Firefox has many new plugins and features which make it a very worthwhile upgrade. Among one of my favorite additions is all of the improvements made to the way it handles memory consumption. Much work has been put into optimizing memory usage for Firefox 3. Initial results show that Firefox 3 may be one of the leanest and meanest web browser out there today in terms of memory consumption. The image below shows how firefox 3 compares with memory consumption when the browser under heavy usage (having 30+ tabs open at the same time among other stressful events). In short Firefox 3 is much improved over Firefox 2 and even more so over IE7. You can have many more tabs open and loading and have your browser running much longer than with Firefox 2 and IE7. That's not to say that when you add plugins the browser will perform at this level. Various plugins will probably affect these results, but it looks like the core Firefox engine is vastly improved in terms of memory consumption and leaks. Good work Firefox team!
