A study released by M:Metrics claims that iPhone is already the most popular device for accessing news and information on the mobile Web, with 85 percent of iPhone users accessing news and information in the month of January. That compares to 13.1 percent of the overall mobile phone market and 58.2 percent of total smartphone owners (e.g. Blackberries). M:Metrics goes on to say that the iPhone is "delivering off-the-charts usage from everything to text messaging to mobile video."

Some interesting data point from the study show that 74.1 percent of iPhone owners listened to mobile music in January, compared to 6.7 percent of the total mobile audience. Eighty four percent of iPhone owners who use an MP3 player use an iPod.

YouTube and Google Maps are extremely popular among iPhone users: 30.4 percent accessed YouTube and 36 percent used Google Maps. In comparison, only one percent of all mobile subscribers accessed YouTube and 2.6 percent checked out Google Maps. In a related story Google has seen mobile traffic to their sites surge recently. You can bet that part of this surge is directly related to the success of the iPhone.

The demographics of a typical iPhone users were described as male, 25-34 years of age, with incomes >$100K, and a college degree. These demographics are similar to that of Blackberries, but users who buy iPhones seem to be more inclined to using multimedia features.

Mark Donovan, an analyst at M:Metrics, says a major factor in the iPhone’s success as a media platform can be credited to AT&T and its unlimited data plan for iPhone users. “Once you take away the uncertainty of data charging, you really incentivize people to use the device".
