How to Increase Your IT Salary

CIOinsight.com published 12 ways to earn higher IT salaries. Really the title should read "How to Increase Any Salary in any Industry" because the suggestions outlined could be applied to almost any industry.

The list includes the following (I've added my own commentary to all of the bullet items):

1 Work for a Larger Company. Larger comanies (>$1B in revenue) consistently pay more than smaller companies.

2 Become a CIO, then take Another CIO job. Surveys show that the initial promotion to CIO may not get a huge pay increase, but if you were to jump ship and take on another CIO role you pay can substantially increase.

3 Focus on Generating Revenue. Try to get into a role where you're focused on generating new revenue streams. These jobs are much more valued and accordingly demand much higher salaries.

4 Work for a Multi-National. Being able to work for a global company offers more challenges and accordingly pays more, but not that much more than simply working for a large company according to the survey.

5 Take Responsibility. Finding ways to expand your responsibility to functions outside of IT make you much more valuable.

6 Upgrade Your Title. Your title will usually demand more pay. If anything is allows you to be more marketable to other companies.

7 Get an MBA. MBA's are still highly valued. Especially if you have a good technology background. It is hard to find people with both technical skills and business acumen. If you can do that expect a big pay hike and to always be in demand.

8 Increase Your Clout. Build your reputation among the top dogs. These are the guys that make all the decisions. If you can get in their heads you'll and more visible to them your likely to be more valued when it comes to salary adjustments.

9 Switch Jobs or Hang on. Switching jobs seems to be the fastest way to increase your salary. Get the right experience, build your reputation, and market yourself to others. A tried and true strategy.

10 Get Involved. Look for new opportunities to become more visible. Continuously show your impact by understanding the business.

11 Spend Part of Career Outside IT. Get to know your business and understand it well. This way you can build systems that align with the overall business objectives.

12 Report to the CEO. Know your way up the ladder. If you can get to a point where you report to the right people you'll get the visibility you need to move up.

This advice all assumes that you in fact are a good performer. There is no substitute for consistent, reliable, top performing employees. If you have the right stuff it just boils down to marketing yourself.

Good Luck,
