Eee PC to Support Windows XP - "Officially"

Asus Eee PC Windows

Looks like Microsoft may be working hard to get a lightweight version of Windows XP available for Eee PC. Asus will begin "officially" offering Eee PC buyers a choice between Linux and Windows.

Asus CEO Jerry Shen predicts that more than half of the Eee PCs sold this year will run XP instead of Linux.

Windows has been notorious for developing bloated OS's that require lots of memory and disk storage for it to work optimally. The Asus Eee PC currently comes with a maximum of 4GB of internal memory (SSD). This constraint is a big concern for OS's like Windows.

Users have reported mediocre experience running XP on Eee PC. XP has issues with screen resolution and memory consumption. There are also some key apps that are missing from this "lightweight" version including media player, and messenger. And don't forget the $80 extra associated with pre-loading XP on Eee PC. Asus has agreed to work with Microsoft to optimize the OS to run well within the Asus Eee PC since demand seems to be there.

On the other hand Linux and Mac OS's seem to be working well out of the box. There are already a whole host of applications that work seamlessly out of the box and the cost is $0. Linux and FreeBSD have always been designed with the mind of being run on less powerful machines like Asus Eee PC. For Windows this seems to have been an after thought.
