Ever wonder how popular Ubuntu is starting to become? Take a look at some interesting statistics when looking at search popularity. If one looks at the trend of the search volume associated with the keyword "linux" and compares it to the trend associated with the search for keyword "ubuntu" we start to see some interesting results.

In 2004 the term "Ubuntu" didn't really exist. But over the last four years we start to see a steady rise in users actually starting to search for "ubuntu". In fact if the trend continues it looks like the Ubuntu may surpass Linux as a more popular search term within the next year.

What's even more interesting is if you look at the trends of the keyword "redhat" vs "ubuntu". The term "redhat" has almost dropped off the map, while ubuntu is rising steadily.

We are starting to see much wider adoption of Ubuntu in industry as well. Sun has been courting Ubuntu for a few years now and some recent announcements indicate that Sun may take the plunge and take over Ubuntu.

Definitely something to keep an eye on.
