I came across this tool called virtual box that may be a great alternative to VMware workstation.

Virtual box works with Windows, MacOS, and most Linux distributions. For Ubuntu Linux virtual box is available as a one click installation. It is available via the Ubuntu Synaptic package manager. In about 20 minutes you'll be able to run Windows XP within Ubuntu linux. Performance seems to be acceptable on a machine with at least 1GB of RAM. You can definitely tweak some of the settings to optimize for your particular application.

Virtual box may not be as robust as VMware workstation and I've seen some forums report several bugs with Virtual box. But as an open source alternative that works with as many OS's as virtual box its worth evaluating for your particular needs.
